Most memory layers put recollections somewhere the user cannot inspect. Basic Memory writes ordinary Markdown to disk instead, and the graph emerges from what is already in the text — wikilinks between notes plus structured observations — so a conversation and a hand-written note land in the same place and either side can correct the other. Search is semantic as well as literal, with optional cross-encoder reranking. Each tool carries behaviour hints marking it read-only, destructive or idempotent, which lets a client discover the right one without probing. The local install is AGPL and free; a paid hosted tier exists for cross-device sync but is never required.
