Maintained under the Appium organisation, this server runs in two modes that solve different problems. With no remote URL it creates a session using the bundled UiAutomator2 and XCUITest drivers, so a laptop with the platform toolchains installed needs no global Appium server; with a remote WebDriver URL it attaches to an existing grid and lets that server own drivers, plugins and capabilities. The tool set is wide — gestures, clipboard, permissions, geolocation, orientation, page source, alerts — and includes an element finder that accepts a plain description instead of an XPath. It also turns a described flow into Java and TestNG code that follows the page object pattern, which is the step that usually keeps exploratory sessions from becoming a real suite.
