Tools are grouped into two tiers and the boundary is the whole point. Tier zero only reads: joined rooms, room info and members, recent messages, messages inside an ISO 8601 date range, the most active users in a room ranked by message count, profiles, public room search, notification counts and the list of direct message conversations. Tier one acts: send a message as plain text, HTML or emote, reply to an event, open a direct message that creates its room when one does not exist, create, join or leave rooms, invite users and change room settings. Authentication is OAuth 2.0 with token exchange and the homeserver is configurable, so the same build fronts Synapse, Dendrite or a self-hosted instance without recompiling.
