shadcn distributes source code rather than a versioned package, so adding a component means copying its current implementation into the repository and owning it from then on. That is exactly the operation this server automates: list what a registry offers, search it by name or purpose, and add several components in one request. The interesting part is namespacing — registries are addressed as @acme or @internal, so a company's private component library sits beside the public shadcn registry and the same request can pull from either. Setup is a single mcp init command from the shadcn CLI, which writes the configuration for the chosen client.
