Playback carries a hard requirement that is easy to miss: the volume and transport tools need a Spotify Premium account, because the Web API refuses those calls on free tiers. Setup is a developer application of your own plus a one-off auth run that stores a refresh token; after that the access token is renewed transparently about once an hour and only a failed refresh sends you back to the auth script. The read side covers search across tracks, albums, artists and playlists, the currently playing item with its device and volume state, your own playlists and the tracks inside them. The write side plays a URI, creates playlists and adds tracks, which turns copying every techno track from one playlist into another into a single request.
