Teresa Torres' tree built in four passes: pull the measurable outcome out of the request, list the customer problems that could move it, map candidate solutions per problem, then pick the experiment that proves one of them cheaply. It exists to block the jump from 'sales wants a mobile app' straight to a sprint plan, and it leaves a written trail of why the chosen option beat the alternatives.
