Starts from what the figure has to encode honestly — position on a common scale, uncertainty, missing observations — and only then moves to styling. Rather than trusting plotting defaults it opens the exported file and inspects it, and it checks whether color carries meaning that nothing else does. Journal-specific rules are applied only once the target venue and submission phase are actually known.
