MCP servers in October 2026: downloads, rankings and changes

We measured npm and PyPI package downloads for 225 MCP servers listed on ai101.tools from 28 September to 25 October 2026. These packages recorded 49,923,595 downloads over four weeks, with Playwright MCP and Chrome DevTools MCP accounting for 59.3% of the total.

How we measured

We collected daily counts per package from the npm downloads API and daily counts without mirrors from the pypistats overall endpoint. We compared 28 September - 25 October 2026 with 31 August - 27 September 2026, two windows of four weeks, or 28 days each.

Of the directory's 446 listed MCP servers, we included 225 with attributable packages, covering 144 npm packages and 81 PyPI packages. We excluded hosted or remote-only servers, Docker or Go binaries without an npm/PyPI package, bridge packages such as mcp-remote, packages shared by several listings, and generic CLIs where the MCP server is a subcommand.

• A download is a package fetch from the registry. Counts include CI runs, fresh containers and cache misses, so they do not measure users or installs.
• npm and PyPI count differently, and the pypistats figures here exclude mirrors. Comparisons within one registry are more reliable than comparisons across registries.
• Weekly counts fluctuate. During this period, @playwright/mcp ranged from 3.47 million to 8.99 million weekly downloads. We compare four-week totals to account for that variation.
• The npm last-week endpoint returned a stale June 2026 window in October 2026. We used explicit date ranges instead.

The 20 most-downloaded MCP servers

The first 10 servers accounted for 78% of measured downloads.

4. Filesystem MCP Server: 2,020,729 downloads in 4 weeks (-28% vs previous 4 weeks), package @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem on npm.
5. MCP Inspector: 1,519,935 downloads in 4 weeks (+32.1% vs previous 4 weeks), package @modelcontextprotocol/inspector on npm.
6. Everything MCP Server: 830,305 downloads in 4 weeks (-18.6% vs previous 4 weeks), package @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything on npm.
7. Fetch (MCP Reference Server): 797,334 downloads in 4 weeks (+85.3% vs previous 4 weeks), package mcp-server-fetch on PyPI.
8. Memory MCP Server: 609,184 downloads in 4 weeks (+7.2% vs previous 4 weeks), package @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory on npm.
9. Time MCP Server: 601,071 downloads in 4 weeks (+20.3% vs previous 4 weeks), package mcp-server-time on PyPI.
10. Postgres MCP Pro: 564,644 downloads in 4 weeks (+17.1% vs previous 4 weeks), package postgres-mcp on PyPI.
11. Grafana MCP Server: 555,604 downloads in 4 weeks (-9.5% vs previous 4 weeks), package mcp-grafana on PyPI.
12. Sequential Thinking MCP Server: 539,696 downloads in 4 weeks (-7.4% vs previous 4 weeks), package @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking on npm.

17. Next.js DevTools MCP: 388,718 downloads in 4 weeks (-3.8% vs previous 4 weeks), package next-devtools-mcp on npm.
18. Sentry MCP: 377,902 downloads in 4 weeks (-15.8% vs previous 4 weeks), package @sentry/mcp-server on npm.
19. Figma MCP: 303,633 downloads in 4 weeks (+6.2% vs previous 4 weeks), package figma-developer-mcp on npm.
20. OpenSearch MCP Server: 299,812 downloads in 4 weeks (+0.8% vs previous 4 weeks), package opensearch-mcp-server-py on PyPI.

By category

Developer Tools had the largest download total, followed by Browsers & Automation. Playwright MCP and Chrome DevTools MCP both appear in these categories. A server can sit in more than one category, so category totals overlap.

npm and PyPI

The 144 npm packages recorded 44,109,198 downloads, while the 81 PyPI packages recorded 5,814,397 over the same four weeks. The registries count downloads differently, and these PyPI figures exclude mirrors, so comparisons within each registry carry more confidence than comparisons between them.

Official servers

The measured set included 117 official servers published by the vendor or the MCP project itself. They accounted for 94% of measured downloads.
