How we measure

We collect daily package download counts from the npm downloads API at api.npmjs.org through its range endpoint, and from pypistats.org through its overall endpoint. The npm data covers each package separately; the PyPI data excludes mirrors.

We measure a server only when its install command points to an npm or PyPI package that is the server itself. We exclude hosted or remote-only servers, Docker images and Go binaries without such a package, bridge packages such as mcp-remote, general CLIs that expose an MCP server through a subcommand or plugin, and packages that several listings install.

For any date, weekly downloads means the seven-day total ending two days before that date. This accounts for npm publishing daily counts with a one to two day delay. We refresh the numbers daily and keep their history for the trend chart and the seven-day change.

A download counts a package fetch from the registry. CI runs, fresh containers and cache misses all count, so these numbers do not measure users or installs. npm and PyPI count differently; comparisons between servers on the same registry are more reliable than comparisons across registries. The full table is available as a CSV file on this page. Anyone can reuse it with a link back.
