MCP servers for VS Code

The most used MCP servers, each with a config you can paste into VS Code.

An MCP server connects VS Code agents to additional tools and data sources, such as databases or external services. The list below includes a ready configuration for each server.

Where the config lives

For use across workspaces, Copilot Global stores configuration in $COPILOT_HOME/mcp-config.json, or ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json when COPILOT_HOME is unset. The configs below use this portable format with a top-level mcpServers object.

Teams can use workspace-root .mcp.json; the guided flow offers it when chat.mcp.workspaceRootConfig.enabled is enabled. The VS Code format in .vscode/mcp.json uses servers, so check the format before copying between destinations.

Add a server

Enable AI features, open a local project folder, and check the publisher’s prerequisites. Command-based servers need their runtime installed on the machine running them.
Choose a server below and copy its JSON into your global Copilot file. If you already have servers configured, merge the new entry into the existing mcpServers object and keep each server ID unique.
Alternatively, run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette, choose Command (stdio), and enter the same launch command with its arguments. Enter a unique server ID, then select Global > Copilot Global.
Review trust and authentication prompts. Follow the publisher’s sign-in instructions. Portable configs do not support VS Code input variables or environment files.

Check that it works

Ask the agent to use the named server for a low-impact action. Expand the tool call and confirm that it came from that server, returned the requested output without a connection error, and informed the answer.

If startup fails, check configuration scope, runtime requirements, and server output. If no tool runs, check tool availability through Chat: Open Customizations > Tools. Repeat the request after correcting the problem.

Security

Local servers can execute code, and tools can access services with your permissions. Review the publisher, command or endpoint, and requested access.
Approve only actions you understand. Keep credentials out of chat and project commits.
