MCP servers for Claude Code

The most used MCP servers, each with a config you can paste into Claude Code.

MCP servers give Claude Code access to external tools, databases, and APIs. The list below includes a ready configuration for each server as a terminal command.

Where the config lives

claude mcp add uses local scope by default: the server is available only to you in the current project. Local and user configurations live in ~/.claude.json. Add --scope user to make a server available across your projects, or --scope project to store shared configuration in .mcp.json at the project root.

Add a server

  1. Open a terminal in your project directory and copy the server’s command from the list below.
  2. Fill in any required credentials or environment values. For a local server, put environment variables after the server name and before --, using --env KEY=value.
  3. Choose the scope. To share the configuration with your project, insert --scope project before the server name.
  4. Run the command, for example: claude mcp add playwright-mcp -- npx -y @playwright/mcp@latest. The -- separates Claude Code options from the command that launches the local server. An Added ... message confirms that Claude Code wrote the configuration.

Check that it works

Run claude mcp list to see configured servers and their health status. Use claude mcp get playwright-mcp for details about the example server, including connection errors.

Inside Claude Code, open /mcp to check status, authenticate remote servers that require OAuth, or select Reconnect for a failed server. If a project server shows Pending approval, run claude interactively to review and approve it.

Security

  • Check that you trust a server before connecting it.
  • Servers that retrieve external content can expose Claude Code to prompt injection.
