MCP servers for Codex

The most used MCP servers, each with a config you can paste into Codex.

Adding an MCP server lets Codex call tools and retrieve information from other systems, such as developer documentation or a browser. Each server in the list below includes a ready configuration as a terminal command.

Where the config lives

Codex stores MCP settings in ~/.codex/config.toml by default. For project-specific settings, use .codex/config.toml in a trusted project. The ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI, and IDE extension share this configuration on the same Codex host.

Add a server

  1. Choose a server below and copy its terminal command.
  2. Open a terminal and run the command. For example: codex mcp add playwright-mcp -- npx -y @playwright/mcp@latest.
  3. For this STDIO form, the server name follows add, and the command after -- starts the server as a local process. If the server needs environment variables, add each with --env NAME=VALUE before --.
  4. For a server that supports OAuth, run codex mcp login <server-name>, replacing <server-name> with its configured name, and complete sign-in.

Check that it works

Run codex mcp list to see configured servers. In the Codex terminal UI, enter /mcp to see active servers. For available management commands, run codex mcp --help. If an OAuth server needs authentication, use codex mcp login <server-name>.

Security

  • Restrict available tools with enabled_tools and disabled_tools. Codex applies the deny list after the allow list.
  • Set default_tools_approval_mode to writes to request approval for tools that are not marked read-only.
  • If you configure an OAuth client secret, Codex saves it in config.toml. Keep that file private and out of version control.
