Fabricated references are the failure mode that discredits an entire AI-assisted manuscript, and the usual title-search check is too weak to catch the subtle cases. Bibverify starts from identifiers — DOI, PMID, PMCID, arXiv — and only then scores candidates on title, author, year, venue and pagination evidence across Crossref, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, Europe PMC, CORE, DBLP and more. The decision that makes the output trustworthy is that a resolvable DOI pointing at a materially different title is reported as identifier_conflict instead of being papered over by a title match, and provider failures such as rate limiting are kept distinct from a genuine no-match. The source .bib file is never overwritten by default. The tool is careful about its own limits: a missing record is not proof of fabrication.
