Most documentation reads badly because one page tries to teach, instruct and explain at the same time. This skill applies the Diátaxis framework: decide which of the four kinds a page is, then write only that kind, with the tone and structure it calls for. A tutorial is a lesson with a guaranteed outcome, a how-to is a recipe for someone who already knows the terrain, and reference stays descriptive.
