When to pick Firecrawl MCP
- Choose Firecrawl MCP when reading a page requires clicking, typing or navigating first.
firecrawl_interactexecutes browser actions and can continue from a previous scrape throughscrapeId. Each call completes one turn before returning control. - You need specific fields from a known page, such as product names and prices.
firecrawl_scrapeaccepts a JSON schema, so you can request those fields instead of returning the entire page as Markdown. - Your task includes PDFs, Word documents or spreadsheets alongside web pages.
firecrawl_parsehandles documents, though hosted parsing requires an upload flow. Direct local file parsing requires a self-hosted Firecrawl API. - You need a dataset assembled from several sites but do not know the URLs.
firecrawl_agentsearches and reads sources, then returns structured data. It starts an asynchronous job; retrieve progress and results throughfirecrawl_agent_status.
When to pick Tavily MCP
- Choose Tavily MCP when your assistant needs to search the web, select useful pages and extract their text.
tavily-searchandtavily-extractcover those separate steps. - You want to inspect a domain's URL structure before collecting content. Use
tavily-mapfor discovery, then extract selected pages or usetavily-crawlto walk the site. - You want web collection to run on Tavily's infrastructure without starting a local browser. You can connect directly to its remote MCP endpoint or run the npm server locally while Tavily processes the web requests.
- You repeatedly use the same search settings. Configure
DEFAULT_PARAMETERSlocally fortavily-search, including options such as search depth, image inclusion and maximum results. The remote endpoint also accepts defaults through a header.
Main differences
- Execution location: Firecrawl can use its cloud API or a self-hosted API selected through
FIRECRAWL_API_URL. Tavily handles web processing on its own infrastructure. Running either npm package locally does not, by itself, move web processing onto your machine. - Tool scope: both support search, page content retrieval, mapping and crawling. Firecrawl additionally documents browser interaction, document parsing and autonomous research that returns structured data. Tavily's documented scope centers on search, extract, map and crawl.
- Search workflow: Firecrawl search returns excerpts and can fetch result pages through
scrapeOptions; each fetched page is billed as a scrape. Tavily exposes search and extraction as separate tools, letting your assistant search first and then request content from selected pages. - Connection options: both offer a local stdio process and a hosted endpoint. Firecrawl also documents local Streamable HTTP through
HTTP_STREAMABLE_SERVER=true. Tavily documents direct HTTP connection in Claude Code and remote connections throughmcp-remote. - Credentials: local configurations use
FIRECRAWL_API_KEYorTAVILY_API_KEY. Both document hosted OAuth and bearer authentication. Firecrawl uses a dedicated OAuth endpoint; Tavily documents an authentication flow from its main remote endpoint. - Data destination: cloud requests send search queries and target URLs to the chosen provider. Firecrawl's self-hosted API option changes that destination. For document parsing, its hosted endpoint requires uploading the file; Tavily's documented extraction workflow concerns web pages.
Setup
For Firecrawl, configure your client's command as npx -y firecrawl-mcp and supply FIRECRAWL_API_KEY in its environment for cloud API access. To use your own Firecrawl API, set FIRECRAWL_API_URL; authentication then depends on that instance.
For Tavily, configure npx -y tavily-mcp@latest with TAVILY_API_KEY in the environment. For a remote connection in Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http tavily https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp, start Claude Code, open /mcp and complete Tavily authentication.
