When to pick Playwright MCP

  • Choose Playwright MCP when you need to investigate a broken form or navigation flow. Use browser_snapshot to inspect page structure, then browser_click and browser_type to work through the interaction.
  • Pick it when debugging requires console output, network requests and screenshots alongside browser actions. browser_console_messages, browser_network_requests and browser_take_screenshot give the agent separate ways to inspect what happened.
  • Use it when your workflow needs Chromium, Firefox or WebKit, or when you want to change viewport dimensions and device emulation. Browser selection and page configuration are exposed through launch options.
  • Choose it when login state needs deliberate handling. Keep a persistent profile, start an isolated session with stored cookies and local storage, or attach to existing Chrome or Edge tabs through the Playwright extension. Concurrent clients need separate profiles or isolated sessions.

When to pick Browserbase MCP Server

  • Choose Browserbase MCP Server when you want browser sessions to run on Browserbase infrastructure. The agent can create or reuse a session with start, navigate within it, and close it with end.
  • Pick it when you want to describe a page action in words. act accepts an action instruction, and Stagehand resolves the page interaction without requiring you to prepare CSS selectors.
  • Use it when the task centers on collecting information from pages. extract accepts an optional instruction describing the desired data, while observe accepts an instruction for identifying actionable page elements.
  • Choose the hosted endpoint when you want Browserbase to operate the MCP server as well as the browser. The self-hosted repository is archived and no longer maintained; the hosted endpoint is the maintained path described in the supplied facts.

Main differences

  • Playwright's standard setup starts a local MCP process and can launch a local browser. Browserbase runs browser sessions in its cloud even when you launch its MCP package locally. Running that package on your machine does not move the browser session onto your machine.
  • Playwright exposes page structure through accessibility snapshots, and tools such as browser_click accept an element reference or unique selector. Browserbase exposes instruction-based act, observe and extract operations through Stagehand. Choose based on whether you need direct page inspection or instructions describing the intended action and data.
  • Playwright's documented local setup needs no server authentication key. Browserbase requires authentication; its archived local setup specifies BROWSERBASE_API_KEY, BROWSERBASE_PROJECT_ID and a model-provider key. The hosted setup documentation says Browserbase covers the Gemini model costs, so those local key requirements should not be treated as hosted connection instructions.
  • Playwright normally connects over stdio, but its README also documents an HTTP endpoint enabled with --port. Browserbase documents stdio for its local package and Streamable HTTP for the hosted service, with mcp-remote as a bridge for clients lacking that transport.
  • Playwright documents local persistent profiles and in-memory isolated profiles. Browserbase places browser activity on external infrastructure and documents context persistence controls in the archived implementation. Its repository explicitly warns that the reference implementation does not represent current production services, so historical flags should not be assumed to configure the hosted endpoint.

Setup

For Playwright MCP, configure your client to launch npx -y @playwright/mcp@latest. The README requires Node.js 18 or newer and documents the Claude Code shortcut claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. Add options such as --headless or --isolated to the launch arguments as needed.

For Browserbase MCP Server, use the hosted connection URL https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp, or the documented bridge command npx mcp-remote https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp. Complete the hosted authentication setup. The archived package command is npx @browserbasehq/mcp; its documented local configuration needs the Browserbase API key, project ID and model key described above.
