When to pick Postgres MCP Pro

  • You have a PostgreSQL connection string and need to investigate slow SQL. Use get_top_queries to find expensive queries and explain_query to inspect execution plans before deciding what to change.
  • You want index recommendations for a workload or a specific set of queries. analyze_workload_indexes and analyze_query_indexes cover those tasks; hypopg lets the server evaluate hypothetical indexes through the PostgreSQL planner before creating them.
  • You need maintenance checks alongside query analysis. analyze_db_health checks signals such as buffer cache hit rates, connection usage, vacuum health and invalid constraints. It also checks for index problems, including duplicate or unused indexes.
  • Your agent should inspect a database without changing its data or schema. Restricted mode uses read-only transactions, parses SQL to reject transaction-control escapes and limits execution time. The README notes that unsafe stored procedure languages can bypass its read-only protections.

When to pick Supabase MCP Server

  • Your work spans Supabase projects and database changes. list_projects, list_tables, execute_sql and apply_migration put project discovery, schema inspection, queries and migrations in the same MCP connection.
  • You need application development tasks alongside SQL. Use get_logs to inspect logs, generate_typescript_types to generate database types and search_docs to look up Supabase documentation.
  • You want to rehearse a schema change on a copy of a project before applying it to the main project. Supabase's branch tools support that workflow alongside its migration tools.
  • You prefer a hosted connection with browser login. The hosted server uses OAuth with dynamic client registration, so you do not need to create a personal access token manually. During setup, select the organization containing your project.

Main differences

  • Connection scope differs. Postgres MCP Pro takes database connection details at startup, which fits repeated work against the same PostgreSQL database. Supabase exposes project-level operations, and its project_ref option scopes a connection to a particular project.
  • Deployment and transport differ in the documented setups. Postgres MCP Pro runs as a Python process or Docker container, using stdio or SSE; SSE lets multiple clients share a server. Supabase documents a hosted HTTP endpoint. Its local CLI and self-hosted environments expose fewer tools and lack OAuth 2.1.
  • Credentials follow different paths. Postgres MCP Pro reads a database URI, commonly through DATABASE_URI. Supabase's hosted connection authorizes access through OAuth. Postgres MCP Pro's optional experimental LLM index tuning additionally requires OPENAI_API_KEY and passes schema information and query plans to an LLM.
  • Their specialist tools address different work. Postgres MCP Pro includes workload analysis, hypothetical index evaluation and database health checks. Supabase includes project management, migrations, logs, TypeScript type generation and documentation search. Both expose execute_sql.
  • Access restrictions use different configuration mechanisms. Postgres MCP Pro selects read-only behavior with --access-mode=restricted. Supabase exposes read_only=true, project scoping through project_ref, and feature selection such as features=database, docs in the connection URL.

Setup

Postgres MCP Pro: configure your MCP client to launch uvx postgres-mcp --access-mode=restricted and set DATABASE_URI to your PostgreSQL connection URI. The Python setup requires Python 3.12 or later; Docker is another documented option. Load pg_stat_statements for query statistics and hypopg for hypothetical index analysis if you need those features.

Supabase MCP Server: in Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http supabase https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp, then complete the login flow. Other clients need the HTTP endpoint in their own configuration format. For a local Supabase CLI environment, the documented endpoint is http://localhost:54321/mcp, with the smaller local tool set.
